Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction is performed for both physical and cosmetic reasons. Sagging breast tissue may be restrictive and painful and reduction can help this situation. The procedure takes 2 to 4 hours and is typically done under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Normally, the plastic surgeon will make an incision similar in shape to an anchor or inverted keyhole that encompasses the area from the top of the nipple to the crease of the breast. Then, the plastic surgeon removes excess fat, skin, and tissue and repositions the remaining skin and areola. Most breast reduction surgery patients resume their daily routines within 1-2 weeks. However, you should wait several weeks before resuming mild exercise or other strenuous activities. You should be extremely gentle with your breasts for six weeks following surgery. The incisions are made within the natural folds under the breasts, around the areola in a line from the crease to the areola. Like a keyhole in many cases. The breast reduction procedure is not a minor one and scars should be expected. The scars generally fade with time to leave more aesthetic. Most insurance is accepted after guidelines are met. We will work will all our patients and their insurance companies to meet medical necessity.

Breast Reconstruction

Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures available today. New medical techniques and devises have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast.

Reconstruction can be performed using a variety of methods: it can be done by using a woman's own body tissue, using implants or by using a combination of the two. If you have been informed that you will need, or if you have already undergone a mastectomy, breast reconstruction may be an option for you. Breast reconstruction is a single operation or series of operations designed to recreate your breast to its original shape. The best reconstructive breast surgery options will depend on the type of cancer, the type of treatment and the physical appearance of your breasts. The timing of your breast reconstruction should be discussed in person.

Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation can enhance the body contour, balance breast size irregularities and reconstruct tissue following surgery. The results can be very satisfying through a safe, effective procedure. The breast implant is inserted directly under breast tissue and the scars are usually inconspicuous. The technique used for your surgery depends not only on your surgeon's preferences, but also on your desired results. Carolina Plastic Surgery offers breast augmentation with saline-filled or silicone-filled implants. These have been FDA approved and demonstrated to be a safe operation with very high satisfaction rates, both short and long term. The breast augmentation involves several important choices on the part of the patient. These include implant size, implant position (on top of or under the pectoralis muscle) and the choice of location for the small surgical access scar. Implant size is selected based on a detailed consultation, aided by viewing many examples of before and after results, as well as obtaining a full understanding of the patient’s goals and concerns. Implant size will also depend on the patient’s individual anatomic considerations including skin laxity and chest diameter. Initial wound healing may take 5 to 10 days. You may be ready to return to work and normal activity at this time. Intimate contact with breasts may resume when healing is more fully completed, usually within 4 to 6 weeks. The doctor may modify your activities such as exercise or lifting for 2 to 3 weeks.

Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

This surgery elevates and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin, raising the remaining skin and tissue, and repositioning the nipples. Breast lift surgery helps patients achieve a more attractive, feminine shape and contour, and more proportionate areolas. Usually 1 to 3 hours are needed for breast lift surgery. Time requirements can vary from case to case. Your breast lift surgery will be performed in our facility that is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facility. Breast lift surgery is an out-patient procedure and you may return home immediately afterward. Breast lift side effects can include temporary discomfort, bruising, or swelling. Breasts may be temporarily numb, or the skin dry. All patients wear a supportive bra home from surgery, and dressings over the incisions for about 2 or 3 weeks.

Gynecomastia (Breast Lift for Men)

Gynocomastia is enlarged or over developed breast in males. Surgery to reduce this tissue is called reduction mammaplasty and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. While the exact cause of this condition is not known, it may be linked to hormone levels and hypertrophy of tissues in the male breast region. When found in adolescents who have passed puberty, it is sometimes necessary to check hormone levels that may be causing this condition. Most of the time surgery is the appropriate treatment. The surgery consists of removing extra breast and fatty tissue from the chest region. In many cases, the gynecomastia can be treated with a combination of ultrasonic liposuction and traditional liposuction. This is done through small incisions in and around the arm pit and below the breasts. The scars are small and well hidden. In some cases, it is necessary to make a small incision below the nipple and actually remove the breast tissue surgically. In some cases the scar placement and size may need discussed by the doctor.
